Where Can I Find Non Profit Grants?
68You may be starting up your own non profit organization. You’ve got an idea about how things will go down: your goals, your objectives and plans on how to reach those objectives have are all written on paper and memorized by heart. Or maybe you’ve already got your own non profit organization, and you’re seeking extra funding to expand the services you can provide to your community. Now all you need is money to get the ball rolling.
Except where do you find sources to get your non profit grants?
The Internet
When it comes to finding non profit grants out of the blue, the internet is your best friend. Simply keying in “non profit grants” in a search engine will lead you to tons of resources at your disposal, both private and public. You’ve just got to be patient enough to muck through all the numerous web-pages abounding the internet, and you’re going to eventually stumble upon some foundations and organizations that provide non profit grants to the specific field you’re program is working in. Once you’ve got them marked down, all you need to do is get the contact information and express your interest in getting a grant. Everything else will follow suit.
Private Organizations
No matter how noble your cause is, you can’t just randomly walk into the offices of a major corporation and ask for a grant. You need to know which entities offer grants, and how to get them. For example, if a certain major entity in the food industry is offering non profit grants, you would need to know that they’re offering such grants in the first place.
Now if you know someone in the private sector, or you’re well connected with individuals in this field, then you definitely have an advantage when it comes to securing non profit grants. This is why if you ever plan to gain funds from the non profit grants of private organizations, then its best that you become well versed in the art of building connections with people.
Local Government
Sometimes, you don’t need to look further than your own town hall to get some funding for your program. For small-scale, community-service oriented programs, you could contact your local city or town hall to get some non profit grants for your program. Some examples of such programs are homeless shelters, community day-care centers, counseling clinics etc.
Federal Government
The Federal government also provides grants for non profit organizations. Such non profit grants from the Federal government usually have stricter requirements and evaluation procedures than from your local government, but you can expect to find a multitude of grants available for programs here. If you would like to learn more about how exactly to secure a non profit grant from the government, you may want to check this link out: http://www.usa.gov/Business/Nonprofit.shtml. This webpage of the government lists the grants that they can provide for non profit organizations.
Just don’t forget: you may know where to get non profit grants, but you’ll only get them if you can provide a solid program for potential funders to sink their teeth in. They’ll only be interested if you can give them a reason to be.

Some really great information! Another great source for finding both foundation and corporation grants to non-profits is The Foundation Center, which is an online source. Most major libaries and universities have this resource and it is free to members of either entities. You can go to their site, http://www.foundationcenter.org/ create an account and get emails regarding grants that fit your program needs. It does not offer the same comprehensive data if you have rights to the full site, but it is a good resource none the less. If you can find a library or university that has the database I would most certainly spend some time using it. I found it a great resource as a grant writer.
